ROAD TEST REQUIREMENTS

Review The Requirements Below To Get On The Road With Your License Today!

If You Are 16 Years Of Age Or Older:
  • Possess a valid DE-964 showing you have completed a Minors Driver Education Course and says "Drivers license only"
  • Have a valid learner license for a minimum of six months
  • Must be accompanied by parents or legal guardian
  • A certificate from the DPS Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) video and receive a certificate dated within 90 days of the skills examination. You can find more information on the ITTD program here.

If You Are 18-24 Years Of Age:
  • Possess a valid DE-964 or ADE-1317 showing completion of a Driver Education Course
  • Have a valid restricted driver's license
  • A certificate from the DPS Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) video and receive a certificate dated within 90 days of the skills examination. You can find more information on the ITTD program here.
  • If you are over the age of 18 and testing with the DE-964, you must also follow all of the requirements of those in the 16-17-year-old category.

If You Are 25 Years Of Age Or Older:
  • A valid Texas Learners Driver's License
  • A certificate from the DPS Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITYD) video and receive a certificate dated within 90 days of the skills examination. Please note: While the DPS Impact Texas Adult Drivers is still in development, you can take the Impact Texas Young Drivers program in its place. You can find more information on the ITYD program here.


If you are older than 25 and are applying for a Texas driver's license for the first time, you are not required to have completed driver's education, however, it is highly recommended.

In addition to presenting confidence behind the wheel, you will be tested on a few very specific driving skills, including:

  • Safe lane changes
  • Parallel parking
  • Making proper turns including a U-turn and a 3-point turn
  • Backing up
  • Obeying speed laws, road signs, and traffic signals
  • Proper use of turn signals and mirrors

How Does the Road Test Work?

During our DPS Authorized third-party skills testing program, our skilled instructors will assess your driving skills, including parallel parking, in a 15-minute driving session. If, for any reason, you don't pass the road test on your first attempt, don't worry! At Family Driving School, we offer you the unique opportunity to retake the test as many times as needed for a small additional fee. Your success on the road is our priority!

What Happens After I Pass My Road Test?

After successfully passing your road test, Family Driving School will promptly provide you with your results. We will then assist you in scheduling an appointment with a DPS office, ensuring a smooth process for obtaining your well-deserved Texas driver's license.

Road Test Frequently Asked Questions

  • What happens if I fail my road test?

    Family Driving School allows you to reattempt your road test as many times as you need for a small additional fee.

  • Do I need to use my own vehicle?

    At Family Driving School, you have the advantage of being able to use your own vehicles to take your road test. However, you are always welcome to use your own vehicle as long as the vehicle you bring passes an inspection to ensure it is safe and can be legally operated on public roadways.


    Requirements Include:


    • No paper plates
    • No dashboard warning lights of any kind
    • Unexpired vehicle registration and inspection
  • Do I need insurance to take the road test?

    If you decide to use our own vehicles to take your road test, you do not have to worry about having insurance. However, if you opt to use your own vehicle, your insurance should be under the name of the person who will be taking the road test.

  • Does using the school’s vehicles cost money?

    Family Driving School charges no additional costs if you decide to take your road test with our own vehicles on-site.
