PHASE 1: 32-hours of

oNLINE EDUCATION

During Phase 1, students wll purchase, enroll, and complete the 32 hours of teen drivers education fully online. Once they receive their certificate, they can obtain their learner's permit and proceed to Phase 2.

PHASE 2: 14 hours of

BEHIND-THE-WHEEL LESSONS

During Phase 2, students will be able to complete the  14 hours of in-car instruction, composed of 7 hours of observation and 7 hours of behind the wheel driving practice with Family Driving School.

Texas Teen Drivers Ed Online

  • What is Teen Drivers Ed?

    As mandated by the State of Texas, individuals under 18 years of age are required to complete a driver education course and present the Texas Driver Education Certificate (DE-964) at the driver's license office.


    The current Driver Education Teen course consists of a minimum of 32 hours of classroom instruction, 7 hours of in-car observation, 7 hours of behind-the-wheel supervised instruction, and 30 additional hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. All of these requirements can be completed with Family Driving School.


  • What are the steps for Texas Teen Drivers Ed?

  • What ages can take this course?

    Per Texas law, If you're 14–17 years old, you are eligible for Texas Teen Drivers Ed. You can start the course as early as 14 years of age, but you have to wait until you turn 15 to apply for your learner's permit, and until you are 16, to finally obtain your Texas driver’s license.

  • Does this course include the state-approved DPS written test?

    The state-approved DPS written test will be provided to you as part of the 32-hour teen driving course. You won’t need to take the written test at the DPS!


    *Please note that the 32-hour course has a final exam and students have 3 attempts to pass it. Students can take their Class-C test any time after completing 6 hours of their online course. Additionally, there is no time limit for the final exam.

  • How long does the course take?

    Our online driver education program offers flexibility, allowing you to work at your own pace and schedule. You can progress through the course according to your availability. However, please be aware that the state of Texas mandates a minimum duration of 30 calendar days to complete the course. 


    *Students enrolled in this program have a maximum of 90 days to complete the full course and can complete up to 2 lessons per day. Time and duration may also vary depending on student progress and allocated time put in by the student per day.


  • What is the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Program?

    Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) is a free two-hour video about the consequences of distracted driving. The ITTD program must be viewed after completion of Behind the Wheel requirements, and before taking the skills examination.
