Once you finish the course, take and pass the DPS final written exam to receive your certificate. Additionally, complete the ITAD course required by Texas law.

Present your certificate to the DPS office. They will take your photo, perform an eye exam, and take your fingerprints before giving you a learners permit.

Texas Adult Online Drivers Ed

  • What is Adult Drivers Ed?

    As mandated by the State of Texas, first-time adult drivers ages 18 – 24 must complete a six-hour driver's education course. At Family Driving School, you have the option to choose between our convenient online or in-person adult driving education courses.

  • What are the steps for Texas Adult Drivers Ed?

    Step 1: Purchase and enroll in Family Driving School’s Texas Adult Online Drivers Ed course.


    Step 2: If you’re between 18-24 years old, you must complete the six-hour curriculum and pass the written D.P.S. test.


    Step 3: After finishing, your Certificate of Completion will be on your student dashboard. You can print it yourself or come to our office for a copy.


    Step 4: Complete the free 1-hour Impact Texas Adult Drivers Course.


    Step 5:Once you have your certificate, go to the nearest D.P.S. office. Pass the vision test, get your learner's permit, and then return to Family Driving School to take your road test.


    Step 6: After passing your road test, you will return to the D.P.S. and be able to get your Texas driver's license. Hooray!

  • Does this course include the state-approved DPS written test?

    The state-approved DPS written test will be provided to you at the very end of the 6-hour adult driving course. You won’t need to take the written test at the DPS!


    Please note that the 6-hour course has a final exam that consists of 40 questions. You must answer 28 questions correctly to pass. You have 3 attempts to pass. There is no time limit set for the test itself.

  • What should I take to the DPS to get my license?

    • DL-14A: Application for Driver License or Identification Card
    • Proof of identity and lawful US presence or citizenship: valid US passport OR your official birth certificate, social security card, and Texas ID card. Click the link for more examples.
    • Your social security card: If you can’t find the original hard copy, you’ll need to order a new one. If you haven’t been issued a Social Security Number(SSN), you’ll need to fill out the Social Security Affidavit at the DPS office.
    • Proof of Texas residency (bring two): deed, mortgage statement, valid and unexpired Texas voter registration card, utility bills, etc.
    • Marriage license, divorce decree, or court-ordered name change: Only if you’re using a name other than what’s on your birth certificate
    • Proof of Texas vehicle registration and financial responsibility for each vehicle that you own (ex: car insurance) OR a statement saying that you do not own a motor vehicle(items 15 and 16 in the DL-14A form)– Your name does not need to be on the car insurance
    • Certificate of Completion from Pass Drivers Ed and Family Driving School: We send you this via the student portal. Your certificate will have a ‘P’ showing that you’ve already passed the written test and don’t need to take it again at the DPS.
  • Can I take this online adult drivers ed course anywhere in Texas?

    Yes, our adult driver's ed course is available to students statewide, including major cities like Houston, Dallas, and Austin.
