TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Teen Driver's Education Consists Of 3 Phases That Are Detailed Below

Online Course Instruction

During Phase 1, the student has to complete the fully online phase of the program. Students are recommended to complete 2 hours of the online course each day for 16 days for a total of 32 hours.

A minimum score of 75 on all coursework is required to pass the course and receive a DE964 certificate. Once the student has obtained their DE964 certificate, they may visit their nearest DPS Office to obtain their learner’s permit.

In-Car Instructions

Students are required to have a permit before beginning Phase 2 of the Teen Drivers Education Program at Family Driving School. Phase 2 is composed of 7 drive times of 2 hours which include 1 hour of driving and 1 hour of observation for a total of 14 hours (7 behind-the-wheel sessions, and 7 observation sessions).

During each session, the student will be graded based on their performance during the lesson. Before each session, an instructor will review previous lesson grades and determine the best course of action for that lesson.

After the 3rd or 4th lesson if a student is not progressing at the expected rate a call will be made to the student’s parents/guardians detailing areas of improvement.

Parent Involved

In Phase 3, students are required to complete 30 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with a parent/guardian, or licensed adult (21+ years), 10 hrs during the evening or 20 hrs during daylight.

This step is required by the DPS to ensure that the student’s parents/guardians are actively involved in their student’s driving education.

Additionally, the DPS requires that the student hold a valid learner's permit for 6 months to finally be able to take the final road test.
